Your Phone Could Soon Be Spotted by a Roadside Camera in Ireland

The next speed camera may not be looking at your speed.

Most Irish drivers associate roadside cameras with speeding.

That may be about to change.

The Government's National Safety Camera Strategy (published April 2026) specifically provides for the future use of cameras to detect mobile phone use while driving.

Not a Garda stopping you, just a fixed charge notice in the post weeks later telling you that you were detected holding your phone while driving.

That’s a huge change.

The legislation isn't in place yet.

But it's coming.
